StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void is an upcoming expansion pack to military science-fiction real-time strategy game StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, and the third part of the StarCraft II trilogy, the second being Heart of the Swarm.[1]

The expansion will include additional units and multiplayer changes from Wings of Liberty, as well as a continuing campaign focusing on the Protoss species. It will span approximately 20 missions and will be priced as an expansion set.[2] Using units from one side may preclude using units from the other side, and alienating one or another sect may cut the player off from part of the campaign.[3]

The campaign will focus on Zeratul as its main character.[4]

Gameplay

The Protoss campaign will be based on diplomacy as the Protoss factions splinter. The player will work with different Protoss tribes which will help them gain allies and advance the plot, but at the same time making them enemies with other tribes.[5] The ultimate goal of the campaign is to unite the various tribes into a viable, unified force that can ensure the Protoss' survival.[6]

Chris Sigaty has expressed doubt that new units will be added to the game, as is planned to be done in Heart of the Swarm. If new units are added, it is likely that other units will be removed from multiplayer.[7]

Plot

As in the previous two games, which focused on Jim Raynor and Sarah Kerrigan, the third installment of Starcraft II will focus on Zeratul as its main character.[4] The Protoss were being systematically exterminated and were dying out from sheer age even before the Great War.[6] The Protoss have been picked off one-by-one, and their shattered civilization will fracture as something even worse happens, forcing a leader to save them from annihilation.[8]

Development

The development of StarCraft II was announced on May 19, 2007, at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Seoul, South Korea.[9][10] At the June 2008 Blizzard Worldwide Invitational, Blizzard Executive Vice President Rob Pardo said that StarCraft II was to be released as a trilogy of games, starting with Wings of Liberty, focused on the Terrans, followed by Heart of the Swarm, revolving around the Zerg, and finally Legacy of the Void, devoted to the Protoss.[1] Blizzard's storyboard team was already working on Heart of the Swarm in early 2010 while Wings of Liberty's gameplay was refined.[11]

Little to no development was going into Legacy of the Void in 2008.[12]
